More than 90% of Americans are confused by the “sell by”, “use by” and “best before” labels on the foods sold at grocery stores - and prematurely discard edibles because they’ve misinterpreted the dates stamped on the products, according to a report released this week.
Modern agriculture requires massive quantities of synthetic fertilizers, especially nitrogen, but they are a huge cost and a source of pollution. Now, a scientist at the University of Nottingham has developed what he claims is an environmentally-friendly process that allows virtually any type of plant to obtain naturally-occurring nitrogen directly from the atmosphere.
In recent years, food waste has arisen as a major topic as we come to terms with feeding an extra two billion people by the middle of this century.
