Please note that the headline to this article is in quotation marks, as the title is a completely subjective decision of this journalist. Through four long days of trawling Anuga, it was a small stand on the South African pavilion that most impressed me for astonishing innovation; for NPD that delivered on every parameter.
Anuga is unparalleled as a business and information platform for the global food industry, and South Africa was one of 108 countries with a presence at the world's largest food trade show. The scale of Anuga puts SA's place in the world in rather diminutive perspective, but that's not to say we're not up there with the best when it comes to quality and innovation.
So where to begin with drinks? My first half hour into the giant hall 8 left me feeling a little ho-hum, normally the drinks floors are full of innovation, and I wasn't seeing much. And where were the big German brewers that in the past were so dominant? Not here, this year. But hang on... what's this out of Ukraine, of all places?
People come to Anuga for many reasons. Aside from hard-nosed business, one which appeals to most is INNOVATION - to look, source, find, discover, be inspired by things NEW. That is certainly the case for this journalist and, luckily, the Anuga organisers give a helping hand via their innovation event, Taste 2015, that aims to uncover top new products in various categories.
