ACCORDING to Datamonitor, the market for frozen food in South Africa is growing at an annual rate of 4,1%. The recently-launched Heinz Gourmet Sensationz range of premium savoury and dessert puffs taps into this positive trend and leverages the brand’s equity to stimulate trial and purchase.
Heinz Foods SA is a joint venture with Pioneer Foods and HJ Heinz, the global US-based food company. Previously, it marketed frozen, prepared meals via the Today and Mama’s ranges of meals, pies and pastries.
The new Heinz Gourmet Sensationz range is innovative and challenges in-store bakeries and ready-to-eat foods, where consumers are often forced to buy larger portion sizes and end up throwing away what’s left when it goes stale. Each pack contains 500g of savoury or dessert puffs. Baked from frozen in 20 minutes, they offer consumers a convenient snack or party food. The single-serve nature of the product means that consumers can bake as many as required at a time, reducing waste and appealing to smaller households and frequent snackers.
This is the first time that the Heinz brand name has been used in this category and Nampak Cartons & Labels pulled out all the stops to give the launch the necessary attention. To add lustre to the cartons, the Heinz brand name is embossed and UV varnished. The cartons are litho-printed in four process colours on a double-lined polyethylene board, which allows the packs to retain their premium appearance and structural integrity throughout the wet conditions of the cold chain.
‘This is a great product and we’re very proud to be part of the Heinz brand story in our country,’ comments Ian Vowles, national sales manager of Nampak Cartons & Labels. |

STYLISH Cape Town foodie company, NoMU, has added three new variants to its traditional Egyptian Dukkah dipper, one of its most popular local and export lines.
PISTACHIO & BLACK PEPPER DIPPER – An irresistible and alluring blend of roasted pistachio nuts and seeds with warm, spicy notes of freshly cracked black pepper.
PISTACHIO & SUMAC – An exotic Middle Eastern blend of pistachio nuts, seeds and sumac with subtle tartness and lemony notes, makes this a perfect match for seafood and chicken dishes.
PASSION CHILLI DIPPER – Egyptian Dukkah just got hotter! A delicious combination of nuts, seeds and spices with smoked passion chilli for added warmth and intrigue as a healthy snack or starter.
Dippers are best used as a traditional bread dipper, dipping a chunk of fresh, warm bread into a bowl of olive oil and then into the spic mix. Alternatively, they can be mixed with cream cheese or ricotta to make a tasty spread.

November 2008
With the braai season in full swing, Heinz has stepped in with four flavours to add a saucy “something extra” to summer mealtimes. Heinz BBQ Sauce comes in Original, Spicy, Smokey Honey and Brown Sugar, and is packaged in a convenient squeeze tube. With the extensive variety of condiments available to consumers, the challenge put to Creative Licence was to create an eye-catching look and feel to showcase Heinz's take on BBQ sauces. The striking design of the Heinz BBQ Sauce range focuses on appetite appeal. Leaping flames on a black background aim for a sophisticated and premium feel that stands out from the clutter on-shelf. The flames are an instant visual cue - plainly marking the sauce as barbeque-flavoured. Versatility is the highlight of the range, and Heinz BBQ sauces can be used to pour, baste or marinade as the packaging suggests. Colour-coded bands clearly differentiate the four flavours. Another important aspect was to incorporate the Heinz ‘keystone' element, which is a core part of the brand's graphic identity and is required to appear on all packaging. The product is scheduled to appear on shelves from November 2008. |

October 2008 COMBINING a dash of chilli with a sweet and spicy taste, Purple Peppa is the latest Steers sauce variant and will hit the shelves in October.
Famous Brands Food Services, a division of Famous Brands, boasts a number of retail products with Steers sauces, dressings and marinades forming a large portion of this retail offering. Marketing executive of Food Services, André Piehl explains that there is a trend among modern consumers to experiment with new and different tastes: 'Purple Peppa addresses both the consumer need and does the job of adding new life into its range of sauces and the sauce category. With the ever changing consumer palate and adherence to trends, Purple Peppa combines habanero chilli peppers, and red bell peppers for an intense sweet flavour with a hint of warm chilli, no burn. Combine the new taste sensation with the unique colour and I believe we have a recipe that every South African, young and old, will love.' |

Lifestyle Brands, incorporating Seemann’s finest quality meats, together with Daniel Chapat, the creator of the famous Piemans Pantry recipes, has developed a range of gourmet pies with 'the emphasis on good old-fashioned values just like Mom used to make them'. One of the secrets is the removal of all trans-fatty acids from the entire pie, while another is insistence on only the best ingredients, including real dairy cream and cheese, says the company. Variants include Portuguese Trinchado Beef Pie, Madagascan Pepper Steak Pie, Moroccan Chicken Pie, and French Chicken Pie. All are based on a homemade Cornish pasty appearance, wrapped in premium French-style butter pastry and with an uncooked weight of 200g. Each box comes with colour coded and bar-coded packets. |
